Bargaining on Xianyu follows a counterintuitive rule: the more eager you look, the worse your price. Sellers field dozens of hagglers daily. What actually moves them isn't pleading — it's the impression that you'll close fast and cause no trouble.
Decode the price words before you speak
- 米 / 软妹币 / 圆子 / 馒头 / 🥕 — all substitutes for "yuan".
- 私 / DM / 厮 / 4️⃣ — an invitation to DM, usually because the price can't be stated publicly.
- 小刀 / 大刀 — a small cut versus a big cut. These two tell you how much padding is baked into the asking price.
- 包邮 / 不包邮 — shipping is a bargaining chip; don't ignore it.
Sellers who write "小刀" are usually offering a courtesy concession; "大刀" means they genuinely want it gone. See "大刀" and you can open lower with confidence.
Script 1: The standard opener (works for most items)
"Hi, is this still available? I've read the listing — if you can do XX, I'll take it right now. If the price doesn't work, no problem, just let me know."
Four things happen: availability confirmed, a concrete number given, immediate-close intent signaled, and an easy exit offered. Nothing is filler, and the seller takes it seriously.
Script 2: Your second offer after a rejection
"Understood. One more ask: how about XX without shipping included? Or just tell me your floor and I'll say yes or no — won't waste your time."
The operative phrase is "won't waste your time". It reframes the haggle as an efficiency question rather than a tug-of-war, and sellers cooperate noticeably more.
Script 3: Pushing back on a flawed item
"There's wear visible at XX in the photos. If it doesn't affect function I can live with it — can we do XX? If not, I'll keep looking."
The formula: name the specific flaw, signal you can accept it, then name a price. Complaints without a proposal just read as nitpicking.
Three things not to do
- Don't open at half price. Too big a cut and sellers simply stop replying.
- Don't say "I really love this". Liking is a premium signal — the opposite of what you want.
- Don't interrogate details during price talks. Settle price first, confirm details after — otherwise you read as high-maintenance.
The goal isn't the lowest price — it's a price neither side regrets.
